A while ago, a colleague pointed out that my reel was missing a realistic creature groom made in Houdini. That observation stayed with me and became the starting point for this project.
While gathering references, I came across a lion with an unusually extended mane flowing down across the belly, a feature that immediately stood out and inspired me. I’ve included this reference in the project, as it became the main direction I chose to explore and replicate.
Working on this piece was both challenging and rewarding. It pushed me to refine my workflow, solve complex grooming problems, and better understand how to balance realism with artistic control.
-----------------------------------------------
At the same time, I’ve been working on this lion, not just as a technical challenge, but as a way to keep pushing forward and improving my skills during one of the most uncertain periods I’ve experienced in the industry.
Since 2023, when the writers’ strike reshaped the industry, things have changed drastically. Opportunities have become harder to find, expectations have shifted, and stability has become something many of us are still chasing. Like many artists, I’ve had to adapt, keep learning, and continue building even without the security of a full-time position.
-----------------------------------------------
There were moments where I felt close to giving up. In those moments, I thought about Ke Huy Quan’s journey and how he kept going even when recognition seemed out of reach, only to be rewarded when he least expected it. It reminds me that timing is unpredictable and that anything can still happen.
Watching Zootopia 2, which I found truly amazing and deeply emotional, brought me back to the reason I started this path in the first place: what I’m fighting for, and where I want to go. After all, it was watching Zootopia back in 2016 that first inspired me to become a Groom Artist, and I’m still determined to give everything I have to reach that goal.
And even if things don’t unfold the way I hope, I’ve learned, as Caparezza, an Italian artist, puts it: “Imparo che non c’è disfatta, se posso premiare lo sforzo” (I’ve learned that there is no defeat, as long as I can reward the effort).
-----------------------------------------------
This piece represents where I am today, both technically and personally.
A combination of everything I’ve learned, refined, and held onto despite the uncertainty.
I’m still here, still improving, and ready to contribute my skills to a team that values dedication, growth, and craft.

POST SCRIPTUM:
After publishing this project, I identified an issue affecting some of the clumping, particularly in the chest area. Further investigation revealed that a couple of nodes responsible for breaking up those clumps had been unintentionally disabled.
This is something I intend to address in a future update with revised renders. For now, I’m keeping the current version as it still reflects the overall approach and development of the groom.
